About Łódź
Łódź is a city in central Poland and a former industrial centre. It is the capital of Łódź Voivodeship, and is located 120 km (75 mi) south-west of Warsaw. As of 2025, Łódź has a population of 639,890, making it the country's fourth largest city.
Łódź first appears in records in the 14th century. It was granted town rights in 1423 by the Polish King Władysław II Jagiełło and it remained a private town of the Kuyavian bishops and clergy until the late 18th century. In the Second Partition of Poland in 1793, Łódź was annexed to Prussia before becoming part of the Napoleonic Duchy of Warsaw; the city joined Congress Poland, a Russian client state, at the 1815 Congress of Vienna. The Second Industrial Revolution (from 1850) brought rapid growth in textile manufacturing and in population owing to the inflow of migrants, a sizable part of which were Jews and Germans. Ever since the industrialization of the area, the city had been multinational and struggled with social inequalities, as documented in the novel The Promised Land by Nobel Prize–winning author Władysław Reymont. The contrasts greatly reflected on the architecture of the city, where luxurious mansions coexisted with red-brick factories and dilapidated tenement houses. [...]
Fun fact: As many as 19 rivers and streams flow beneath the surface of Łódź. Most of them were hidden in underground channels and concrete culverts during the city’s rapid industrial development.

Visit Manufaktura
Manufaktura is one of the most iconic places in Łódź and a great example of how the city has transformed its industrial heritage. Once part of Izrael Poznański’s huge 19th-century textile factory complex, the historic red-brick buildings have been beautifully revitalized into a lively destination combining shopping, restaurants, culture and entertainment.
Fun fact: At Manufaktura, you can find the longest fountain in Europe, stretching an impressive 300 meters.
At the heart of Manufaktura is a large pedestrian square surrounded by the distinctive old factory buildings. It’s a popular meeting place for both locals and visitors, hosting concerts, markets and seasonal events, while the complex itself is home to hundreds of shops, restaurants, museums, a cinema and plenty of other attractions.
For anyone interested in Łódź’s history, it’s especially worth remembering that this isn’t just a shopping centre - it’s a piece of the city’s industrial past brought back to life. The former Poznański factory and the surrounding buildings played an important role in Łódź’s development as one of Europe’s major textile centres.

Visit the Historic Liberty Square of Łódź
Plac Wolności, known in English as Liberty Square, is an octagonal public square located in central Łódź, Poland. Completed in 1823, it is the northern endpoint of the commercial Piotrkowska Street. Its present name commemorates Poland regaining its independence in 1918.
When initially marked out, the square was named Rynek Nowego Miasta, translating to "New Town Market" as it symbolised the beginning of a new industrial settlement.[1] Following Poland's independence in 1918, it was renamed to Plac Wolności to honour the freedom and liberty after 123 years of foreign rule in Poland.[2]

Łódź, especially during the summer, is full of various themed events. From open-air concerts and freedom parades to the Light Move Festival, there is always something happening in the city. The latter is perhaps the most interesting of them all. Taking place typically at the end of September, it transforms the city’s main streets into a spectacular display of illuminated monuments, outdoor cinemas, and dazzling light installations.
